174    PATTERSON FAMILY CEMETERY (1835)

Location - Northeast of Chapel Hill off Erwin Road (SR #1734, formerly Mt. Moriah Church Road) about 250 ft eastward of the road across a field almost directly opposite the front entrance of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. The cemetery is all the way across the field in a clump of cedars, box trees and hardwoods. The site is visible from the church steps and from Erwin Road.

      Coordinates: 35d 58m 20.0s N; 79d 00m 21.0s W Click here for Online Maps

Survey - This cemetery was surveyed on November 7, 1974. Milton Forsyth visited and photographed the cemetery in February 2005, and found the site in fine condition.
Plat of the cemetery boundaries as existed in 1941. High resolution copy of the Plat.

Graves, Marked - There were 27 marked graves.

Graves, Unmarked - There were at least 5 unmarked graves (including that of John Tapley Patterson).

Current Status - Fenced square cemetery approximately 50' square encloses several large old box trees and 5 rows of marked graves, 27 in all. Row 3 in the midst of the box trees is apparently the oldest (1835) of the rows. A dense carpet of periwinkle covers the cemetery, now unkempt and covered with vines and brambles. There are extraordinarily handsome tombstones, possibly the handsomest in the county. John Tapley Patterson is said to be buried in one of the unmarked graves here. This is probably not the 'Patterson's Graveyard' near the 'Baptist Meeting House' mentioned in Orange County Deed Book 22, p. 267 (May 3, 1822).
