020    ENO PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH CEMETERY (ORG. 1755) 'OLD ENO'

Location - In north central Orange County, .3 miles west from Rte 86 north, via Carr Store Road (SR #1352) to Eno Cemetery Road (SR #1383), south on that road 1.1 miles to the cemetery. On the shore of Lake Orange, formerly the east fork of the Eno River, where the original church was built. Note the state historical marker at the intersection of Carr Store Road and Eno Cemetery Road.

      Coordinates: 36d 09m 27.0s N; 79d 08m 41.0s W Click here for Online Maps

Survey - This cemetery was surveyed in December, 1975. View of the NC state historical marker. View of the church monument. Plat of the cemetery boundaries as existed in 1964. High resolution copy of the Plat.

Pictures of gravemarkers provided by Ellen Kerley in May 2007.

Graves, Marked - There were 126 marked graves.

Graves, Unmarked - There were 375 graves marked by uninscribed fieldstones.

Comment - One of the three oldest cemeteries in Orange County, the others being the Hillsborough Old Town Cemetery (1757) and the old New Hope Presbyterian Church Cemetery (1756). It has some of the most beautiful tombstones in the county. The church was moved two miles from its original site in 1893 after a fire destroyed the third church on this original site on the banks of the Eno River. The cemetery fell to disuse and became isolated. The road was constructed and the cemetery extensively restored in 1965 after having become overgrown because of lack of attention.

Status - Increased development around Lake Orange now makes the cemetery readily accessable on its splendid site on the lakeshore. However, keeping it clean is clearly a substantial task and vegetation had grown up since previous efforts. In 1995 two Girl Scouts, Amy Cloud and Erin Saleeby, seniors at Chapel Hill High school, began a project leading volunteers to clean up the cemetery. By mid-1996 much again was completely clear, and work continued cutting brush and small trees off the remainder. A fine new gate was also installed (see the Raleigh News & Observer, May 2, 1996, P. 1b).
